International Travel – 5 Things No One Tells You

Packing & Prep Tips for International Travel: 5 Things No One Tells You

Planning an international trip? You’ve probably read the usual advice: check your passport, pack light, and notify your bank. But what about the things most travelers don’t realize until it’s too late? Here are five unexpected travel tips to help you avoid stress, surprises, and even serious legal trouble.

1. Your Prescription Meds Might Be Illegal There

Many travelers don’t realize that medications legal at home can be banned abroad. For example, common ADHD medications like Adderall are illegal in Bali, and even carrying them could land you in serious trouble. Always check the country’s medication restrictions and bring a doctor’s note for any prescriptions you do take.

2. You Need a Backup for Your Phone’s SIM Card

Relying on your phone’s SIM for navigation, banking, and emergency calls? A lost or broken SIM can leave you stranded. Before you leave, get an eSIM or a backup physical SIM from a global provider like Airalo or Holafly, so you always have access to data and calls.

3. You Might Be Required to Have Proof of Funds

Some countries (like the UK and Canada) require proof that you have enough money for your stay, especially if you don’t have a return ticket. Immigration officers can ask for bank statements, credit card balances, or even cash-on-hand proof before letting you in. Always have a screenshot or printed copy ready.

4. Your Electrical Devices Might Not Work—Even with an Adapter

A universal adapter is great, but voltage differences can fry your devices. Japan and the US use 100-120V, while Europe and much of Asia run on 220-240V. Check your electronics—if they aren’t dual voltage, you’ll need a power converter, not just an adapter, to avoid destroying your gear.

5. Some Countries Charge “Exit Fees” When You Leave

You budgeted for flights and hotels, but did you budget for leaving the country? Some destinations, like Costa Rica and the Philippines, charge an exit fee that’s not included in your airfare. Always check in advance so you’re not scrambling for cash at the airport.
