If you’ve been scrolling through travel content lately and wondering whether there’s somewhere in Mexico that still feels untouched, unhurried, and genuinely magical, let us introduce you to Isla Holbox (pronounced Hole-bosh).
Our very own travel agent, Leanne, recently spent seven nights on this incredible island with her two kids, ages 10 and 12, and came back absolutely glowing. No surprise. Holbox has a way of doing that to people.
This isn’t a post about an all-inclusive in Cancun. This is about a destination that will stop you in your tracks, slow your heartbeat, and make you feel like you discovered something the rest of the world hasn’t caught onto yet. The good news? It’s easier to get to than you might think.

What Is Holbox Island?
Holbox is a small barrier island located off the northern tip of the Quintana Roo coast, sitting at the point where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico. It’s part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve, which means the surrounding waters are protected and absolutely teeming with wildlife.
The island is car-free. Streets are sand. Transportation is by golf cart, bicycle, and the occasional ATV-style taxi. There are no high-rises. There are no chain resorts crowding the beach. There’s just crystal-clear turquoise water, white sand, the sound of birds, and a pace of life that feels like someone turned the dial way down.
For travellers who have “done” Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or the big resort corridors and are looking for something different — Holbox is your answer.
Getting There: Easier Than You’d Expect
Fly into Cancun (CUN) — that’s your gateway. From there, getting to Holbox is a simple two-part journey.
Step 1: Transfer to Chiquilá
From Cancun Airport, you’ll travel to the small coastal town of Chiquilá, where the ferry to Holbox departs. The drive takes approximately two hours.
Leanne used Holbox Transfers for a private transfer and found it reliable, efficient, and the right call after a full day of travel. For budget-conscious travellers, the ADO Bus is also an option from the airport — a little longer but very economical.
Step 2: Ferry to the Island
Once in Chiquilá, ferries run every 30 minutes, operated by Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos Ferry. Tickets are purchased right at the dock, staff help with luggage, and the ride across is about 30 minutes. That crossing is your first look at the colour of the water — and it’s the moment most travellers fall in love.
On the island side, ATV-style taxis are lined up and ready to bring you to your accommodation. Welcome to Holbox!
What Makes Holbox Unique?
The Water
We’ll just say it: the water on Holbox is some of the most stunning you will ever see. Shallow, warm, and a colour of turquoise that looks almost too vivid to be real. Leanne noted that locals told her clarity gets even better starting in May — hard to imagine, because what she saw in late March was already breathtaking.
Car-Free Living
No cars means no noise, no fumes, and no danger. Kids roam freely. The main modes of transport are ATV taxis (you’ll spot them constantly) and golf carts, which you can rent easily. Everything from groceries to kayaks to food delivery can come right to your accommodation. The island has a genuinely relaxed, village feel that’s increasingly rare to find in popular destinations.

Wildlife and Nature
A protected nature reserve surrounds Holbox. You’ll see flocks of birds gathering along the sandbars, flamingos in the lagoon, and if you visit between June and September, you may be able to swim alongside whale sharks — one of the most remarkable wildlife experiences on the planet.
The island also features bioluminescence, with the water glowing at night. Leanne caught a few faint twinkles during her March visit, but peak season for this phenomenon runs from June through September. If you want the full experience, that’s the time to go.
The Four-Island Tour
One of the highlights of Leanne’s trip was a boat tour covering four incredible stops:
- Isla Pájaros (Bird Island) — a protected bird sanctuary with incredible birdwatching
- Yalahau Cenote — a freshwater spring right at the water’s edge
- Isla Pasión — a quiet, scenic island stop
- Punta Mosquito — the standout of the day; shallow, glassy water that felt almost unreal to walk through
This tour is an absolute must-do and accessible right from the island.

Where to Stay: A Look at Mystique Holbox by Royalton
Leanne had the opportunity to tour Mystique Holbox by Royalton, a small boutique resort situated directly on the beach. This is not your average all-inclusive. It’s intimate, thoughtfully designed, and perfectly in tune with Holbox’s laid-back spirit.
The property features:
- A beachfront restaurant and bar
- Spa services
- Two pools
- Beach loungers, umbrellas, and hammock swings
- A welcoming, attentive team
“The manager and front desk team were incredibly welcoming,” Leanne noted.
For travellers who want a touch of elevated comfort without losing that relaxed island feeling, Mystique Holbox checks every box.

Suggested Holbox Itinerary: 7 Nights
Here’s how we’d recommend spending a full week on Holbox, based on Leanne’s experience:
Day 1 — Arrive and Exhale
Transfer from Cancun, ferry crossing, check in. Rent a golf cart. Walk to town, grab dinner at a beachfront restaurant, and let the island settle over you.
Day 2 — Explore the Island
Golf cart the full stretch of the island. Find your favourite beach spot. Swim. Do absolutely nothing. You’ve earned it.
Day 3 — Four-Island Boat Tour
Book this one in advance or first thing upon arrival. Hit Isla Pájaros, Yalahau Cenote, Isla Pasión, and end at the breathtaking Punta Mosquito. Bring sunscreen.
Day 4 — Town Day
Explore the main market square, browse local shops, and try a different restaurant for every meal. Holbox has a surprisingly great food scene — fresh seafood, Mexican classics, international bites, and yes, even a Subway if the kids need a familiar fix.
Day 5 — Beach and Water Day
Kayak rental, paddleboarding, or simply swimming in that impossibly clear water. Spend the golden hour at the water’s edge.
Day 6 — Spa and Slow Day
Book a spa treatment at Mystique Holbox or one of the island’s boutique wellness spots. Slow morning. Long lunch. Sunset drinks at a beach bar.
Day 7 — Last Morning
Take the golf cart out one more time. Buy something from a local artisan. Linger over breakfast. Then head back to Chiquilá and on to Cancun for your flight home — already planning your return.
Who Is Holbox For?
Families
Leanne travelled with her 10- and 12-year-olds and described feeling “safe and completely at ease” the entire trip. The car-free environment, shallow waters, and friendly locals make it an excellent choice for families. Kids who love wildlife, boats, and the freedom of exploring a small island will thrive here.
Couples and Honeymooners
The boutique resorts, beachfront dining, bioluminescence tours, and slow pace make Holbox genuinely romantic. This is a place to disconnect and reconnect with your favourite person.
Adventure Seekers (June–September)
If your travel bucket list includes swimming with whale sharks, experiencing bioluminescent water, or spotting flamingos in the wild, Holbox during the summer months is extraordinary. It’s one of the few places in the world where all three are possible in a single trip.
Travellers Who’ve “Done” Cancun
If you’ve been to the Riviera Maya, enjoyed it, but are ready for something with more soul — Holbox is your next step.
Solo Travellers
Safe, walkable, incredibly friendly, and full of interesting travellers doing exactly what you’re doing. Great for those who want to explore at their own pace.

Practical Tips for Holbox
Currency: Mexican pesos are preferred, though credit cards are widely accepted. ATMs are available on the island.
Best time to visit: Year-round, but May through September brings the clearest water, bioluminescence, and whale shark season. March to April offers lovely, less humid conditions.
Getting around: Golf cart rental is the way to go. You can have just about anything — food, bikes, kayaks — delivered to your accommodation.
Internet and pace: WiFi quality can vary by accommodation — Leanne enjoyed great connectivity where she stayed, but either way, Holbox’s laid-back energy makes it a natural digital detox if you want it to be.

Ready to Add Holbox to Your Travel Plans?
Leanne put it simply: “Holbox is truly something special. It left a lasting impression on us, and it’s a destination we look forward to returning to.” That kind of enthusiasm from a travel professional who has seen a lot of the world means something.
